Lost Mode

Lost mode is a remote management action that locks a device and displays a custom message on the screen when a device is reported lost or stolen. Lost mode prevents unauthorized access while allowing the device owner to be contacted.

Lost Mode Activation

When a device is reported lost or stolen, IT administrators can activate lost mode through the MDM console. The device receives the command and enters lost mode, typically on the next check-in or immediately if connectivity is available.

Device Lockdown

In lost mode, the device lock screen is activated and cannot be bypassed without the device unlock credentials. Users cannot access any device functions or data while in lost mode.

Custom Message

Administrators can configure a custom message displayed on the lock screen, typically including contact information (phone number or email) for the device owner or IT department. This allows finders to contact the organization.

Data Protection

Lost mode protects data by preventing unauthorized access to the locked device. If the device is found and someone attempts to use it, they cannot bypass the lock to access corporate data.

Recovery Option

If the device is found, the owner or IT staff can unlock it using the device credentials or through IT recovery procedures. Once unlocked, the device returns to normal operation.

Escalation to Wipe

If the device is not recovered within a specified time, administrators can escalate from lost mode to remote wipe, completely removing all data. This prevents the device from being exploited even if physical security of the device is compromised.

Legal Considerations

Organizations should have clear policies about lost mode and data wipe procedures. In some jurisdictions, different procedures apply to corporate vs BYOD devices.
